Obituary of William L Jefferson
William L. Jefferson departed this life on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at his residence in Lawnside, NJ. Born on July 13, 1947, he was the son of the late Legette Jefferson, Sr. and Mrs. Alice Marion Blakeney Jefferson. He was the second of twelve children born to his parents.
William received his formal education in Chesterfield, South Carolina, graduating from Gary High School in 1967. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army where he actively served in Vietnam before being injured in combat. As a disabled veteran, he continued his employment with the U.S. Government as a civil servant at the Social Security Administration (SSA) Office located in Philadelphia, PA. While employed at the SSA, he was injured on the job, resulting in his early retirement.
William was united in holy matrimony to Joanne (Thomas) Jefferson and have two daughters, Conchita and Rosita.
William was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who cherished his family. He encouraged strong family values, morals, education, and discipline in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and any other children that came into his company or care. He enjoyed telling family stories and histories, playing checkers (with anyone willing to play), gardening, cleaning his garage, socializing with family and friends, and partnering with his wife in their family business, until his death.
William was a member of The American Legion William Bauer Post 829 in Philadelphia, PA, serving for 50 years before his death. He was a well-known member of his community, a mentor, and voice of inspiration to all who came into his company.
William leaves to cherish his life and loving memory: two daughters; Conchita Vargas of Philadelphia, PA, and Rosita Corbin of Lawnside, NJ; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, son-in-law (Don Corbin), five brothers, five sisters, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, lodge brothers (Post 829) and friends.
William was preceded by his father; Legette Jefferson, Sr., mother; Alice Marion Blakeney Jefferson, brother; Legette Jefferson, Jr.
On Wednesday morning, May 18, 2022, God called for William to come home, and William answered his call. We will truly miss his undying love for his family, the sound of his laughter, welcoming smile, comforting voice, telling of his colorful (and often hilarious) historic life stories, and love of challenging any willing opponent to a game of checkers.
Lovingly and so Sorrowfully,
