We at CarusoCare are dedicated to our families, our community and our country. The United States flag is an important symbol of our freedom and our service of others. The following information is provided to ensure consistent understanding of the display and treatment of our national symbol.
To honor our deceased Veterans whose final disposition includes cremation, and to assist with the proper and respectful disposal of those flags that are no longer worthy of display, we are organizing a flag retirement program. It is our desire that the casket of every deceased United States Veteran whose family has elected cremation be draped with the United States Flag. In an effort to support this endeavor, CarusoCare offers the free service of proper disposition of the flag at our retired flag drop box at our Pennsauken location:
6600 North Browning Rd. Pennsauken, NJ 08109
Respect for Our Flag
For over 200 years the United States flag has symbolized freedom, unity and the history of our great country. The U.S. flag code provides reference for the respectful display, treatment and disposition of a worn flag. When it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. For complete content regarding U.S. flag code and understanding the display and treatment of our national symbol please reference the CRS Report for Congress by visiting senate.gov
Position & Manner of Display
The flag of the United States is used at celebrations, events, parades and memorial services. The code for proper display under varied circumstances must be understood.
When carried in a procession with another flag, it should be either on the marching right or in front of the line of flags.
Should not be displayed on a float in a parade except from a staff.
The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides or back of a vehicle. When the flag is displayed on an automobile, the staff should be fixed firmly to the body of the auto or clamped to the right fender.
No other flag or pennant should be placed above the U.S. flag.
The U.S. flag when displayed with another flag, should be on the flag's right.
Time & Occasion for Display
The flag of the United States is displayed across the country at schools, public facilities, military bases, places of worship, and private properties. The location and scenario may vary considerably. Flag code reveals requirements to maintain respect and consistency for our nation's symbol.
It is universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs.
When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during hours of darkness.
The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement unless an all-weather flag is displayed.
The flag should be displayed daily on or near the main administration building of public institution.
The flag should be displayed in or near every polling place on election days.
The flag should be displayed during school days in or near every school.
The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
On Memorial Day, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.
By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a state, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory.
Pledge of Allegiance
Originally published over 100 years ago, the Pledge of Allegiance is a patriotic salute that begins our school days, special events, and days of significance.
To be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.
When not in uniform, men will remove any hats.
Persons in uniform should remain silent and face the flag.
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
