I knew Tom as a student and a good friend while he was a member of my undergraduate research team when I was a young professor of psychology at Florida State University. He was one of the very brightest students that I encountered over the years, creative, with a wicked sense of humor. I encouraged him to study for a doctorate in psychology at my alma mater, the University of Colorado, but after a semester or so in Boulder, he chose a different path. Obviously, it was a wise choice, as his accomplishments have shown.

I will miss your friendship and conversation at Eclipse, Tom. “One and done”. I asked why once and you replied there had been many years when it hadn’t been that way. Think I did catch you for 2 beers on one occasion. Your friendship has meant the world to me, Tom.

Tom Ferrick
A warm and intelligent man, with just a touch of quirk. I admired his work as a CAR reporter, but especially his work in the Baltic and elsewhere in introducing American-style journalism to a new generation of reporters. With regret and a prayer, bless you, Tom.,

Another friend just reminded me of what a practical joker Tom was. Once, when Sharon was away from her desk long enough (she was conducting a training class or something), Tom took a screenshot of her desktop and wrote a little script that would flip the image every time she clicked on it. So when she got back to her computer, instead of waking up her computer, it just kept rotating

To Tom's Family,
I am so sorry for your loss and happy for you having had Tom in your lives. I'm copying this here from a post I made, minutes ago, on Facebook.
From the moment he joined us in Newsroom Technology at The New York Times, Tom had an outsized impact on me.
I learned so much from him.
We shared a number of things (like our love of spirits, DooWop and Dad Jokes).
We had many memorable moments over the years but the one I come back to most often was our outing, just the two of us, on the first night of the blackout of 2003, during which we found our way to a Midtown bar and drank a lot of their warm, on-the-house, tap beer by candlelight; returning to 229W after a while to sleep on and under the furniture in the News Tech area.
We referred to ourselves as Tom #1 and Tom #2 and never agreed on who was who . . . Tom was #1.

Sad news. Tom was a great and pioneering data journalist, an entertaining storyteller, and a serious guy with a deep streak of humor and, especially, self-effacing humor, as vividly recounted in the death notice.
